Trader Joe's Celebration Cake Gelato Review

Trader Joe's Celebration Cake Gelato pint on kitchen counter

Believe it or not, this is our first review of Trader Joe's scoopable ice cream/gelato. We've reviewed all sorts of ice cream treats, but let's start scooping.

Trader Joe's Celebration Cake Gelato "with cake pieces & rainbow sprinkles" is a pint-sized (yes, an actual pint!) container of ice cream. Sixteen ounces, or two cups, costs $3.79.

Trader Joe's Celebration Cake Gelato calories

The packaging is super cute and festive. I love it when Trader Joe's lists the nutrition breakdown per serving size AND for the entire container. It's like they know us.

Gelato means ice cream in Italian, but it is made a bit differently. Gelato typically does not contain eggs or egg yolk and calls for less cream and more milk. It seems counterintuitive given no eggs and less cream, but gelato is known to be richer and smoother than American ice cream. (Source: Southern Living)

Looking at the ingredients, there are egg whites in the cake pieces and down at the bottom of the list, "less than 2% of egg yolk."

HINT: Leave your ice cream or gelato at room temperature before scooping. It makes scooping easier, and the ice cream will actually taste better!

This is the BEST ice cream scoop we've ever owned! They make great gifts, too.

Trader Joe's Celebration Cake Gelato Review

She says (Bridget): The gelato texture is perfection. Luxuriously creamy, rich, and smooth. I know cake batter is a flavor that can be polarizing - I usually like it. At our local froyo place, "cake batter" is almost always my pick. The "cake" flavor here tasted especially off and fake to my palate. The sprinkles were a nice contrast to the smooth gelato without being crunchy. While I could see the cake pieces in the mix, I couldn't pick them out texture-wise.
Overall rating: 2.5 out of 5 stars

He says (Mark): Celebration Cake is a great product name, and the packaging has a festive vibe. The gelato is very creamy and smooth, but I'm not a fan of sprinkles in any dessert. While I like cake when paired with ice cream, the reverse doesn't work for me. I'd take plain vanilla gelato over this combination any day.

Will we buy it again? No...and we actually tossed the remainder of the pint. (Maybe that could have been our entire review.)
