We must have salad to balance our ice cream, cookies, and snacks. I was happy to see Trader Joe's added these salad kits to their individual salad offerings. 

Trader Joe's Everyday Butter Lettuce Salad Kit is billed as a "complete salad kit" which includes butter lettuce, parmesan, croissant croutons, and ranch vinaigrette.

What is Butter Lettuce? 

Unfortunately, butter lettuce is not made from butter (cue sad trombone) but is named for its tender, soft, buttery texture. The taste is mild. A head of butter lettuce almost looks like a giant flower with petals (leaves) twirled in soft ruffles. 

Masterclass pegs it as an excellent source of vitamins A, C, K, calcium, and iron.

He says (Mark): Butter and lettuce don't seem to go together except in the case of this green. Butter lettuce is my modern fave - stepping it up from the iceberg and Romaine of my childhood. Smooth lettuce leaves, torn into perfect bite-sized chunks. Just right on the Parmesan cheese. While I like the ranch vinaigrette…A LOT…it needed about 25% more to make my taste buds sing. With some added salt and pepper, "good" became "great!" Enough salad for two, especially with a side of bread and a glass of vino.

She says (Bridget): Let me start with the croissant croutons. While there aren't many of them (probably a good thing), they are flaky, buttery, and oh-so-yummy. I appreciated the ranch vinaigrette as opposed to a straight-up ranch dressing. It was flavorful but didn't overpower the tender, delicate butter lettuce leaves. Grated parmesan is always an excellent salad addition in my book. This salad kit did need salt and pepper. If it came with a little packet of S&P, I would have called this a 5-star salad. (Oh, and I say it serves 3, not 2.5.)

Will we buy it again? We both say yes! Maybe add a little rotisserie chicken or roasted chickpeas to make this a meal. Remember the salt and pepper!
