A common street food in South America, arepas are grilled corn cakes that are stuffed with meats or cheese. Trader Joe's version has mozzarella cheese in the center.

You'll find Trader Joe's Corn & Cheese Arepas in the freezer section. They come two to a box and are individually packaged. A box of 2 costs $3.49.
Heating instructions are given for both stovetop and oven. I chose the stovetop. As usual with Trader Joe's frozen items, I found these needed more cook time. Following the defrost and cooking instructions, the cheese in the center wasn't completely melted. With a couple of more minutes in the pan, they were cooked perfectly.
Trader Joe's Corn & Cheese Arepas Review
He (Mark) says: I was surprised by how much I enjoyed these. Great size for a small meal accompanied by a side dish. Preparation was easy. Easy peasy and plenty cheesy. Season with a little sea salt on top. If you like that fresh corn flavor, give these a try.

She (Bridget) says: I loved these. Loved. Satisfyingly savory and a little sweet, one arepa is a perfect accompaniment alongside a salad. The cheese is melty, but it's not too much or a complete mess. The corn cakes taste of, well, corn, and cook up a little crispy on the outside while remaining fluffy on the inside. I did add a sprinkling of flaky sea salt (this Falksalt, to be exact). It needed just a touch. I also loved the arepas with a bit of Cholula.

Would we buy these again? Yep. Heading back to grab more this week!
Trader Joe's Corn & Cheese Arepas: We approve!
This is not an Arepa. This is called Cachapa.
ReplyDeleteThat's not arepa. Those are cachapas.
ReplyDeleteI usually like TJ products, but this arepa is VERY sweet. Also, the mozzarella is mushy, does not taste cheesy.
ReplyDeleteI purchased arepas this week and found many bits of plastic inside either in the cheese or in the corn cake.
