Trader Joe's Eggwich Breadless Breakfast Sandwich Review

Trader Joe's Eggwich Breadless Breakfast Sandwich Review

I love eggs. From my head down to my legs. (Anyone else remember that commercial?) I do love eggs - egg sandwiches, egg bites, egg casserole, fried eggs, hard-boiled eggs...you get the idea.

While I love a yogurt or a bar for actual breakfast, I eat eggs for lunch quite often.

This week's Trader Joe's review is of their new offering: Eggwich Breadless Breakfast Sandwiches. These gluten-free "sandwiches" are made with turkey sausage and American cheese in the center and "bread" made of eggs. Meaning, there's no bread. Does that make sense?

A box of two frozen eggwiches costs $4.99. The eggwiches are individually wrapped inside the box and come with heating instructions for the microwave or toaster oven.

Someone online noted the daily value of cholesterol in one eggwich - 88%. That's not a number I typically check, but yeah, it seemed pretty high. I searched out the nutrition info for my beloved Starbucks Gruyere and Bacon Sous Vide Egg Bites, and, for comparison, a serving (2 bites) has 71% DV of cholesterol. I guess that's par for the course with eggs, cheese, and meat. As Tony Soprano would say, "What're gonna do?"

REVIEW (Bridget): As an I'm-starving-and-there's-nothing-to-eat-in-the-house freezer food, these are fine, just fine. I didn't find the eggwiches filling at all - after eating one, I definitely wanted to eat the second one. Or a few cookies. The eggs were on the dry side, but I guess if you're eating this with your hands like a sandwich, that's a good call. Compared to the frozen breakfast sandwiches I typically buy, these were a little lacking in flavor. If I were making these, I'd make them a bit larger, add a little red pepper, and put the whole concoction inside of an English muffin. (But then it wouldn't be "breadless," so...)

Overall rating: 3 of 5 stars

Would I buy these again? No, I'll stick to my other favorite frozen egg meals.

Trader Joe's Eggwich Breadless Breakfast Sandwich: Not bad, not great.

If you're looking for an egg dish that's gluten-free and PACKED with flavor, make this Egg-Crust Breakfast Pizza from Kalyn's Kitchen. We sometimes make a large version for dinner, and it's SO GOOD.
