I'll be honest...I hesitated putting Trader Joe's chocolate hummus on our review list. Look, I love a lemon-y, garlic-y hummus. And I love, well, just about anything chocolate.
This chocolate version of hummus always felt a bit like that trend of sneaking veggies into desserts. You know the recipes where you're asked to add chopped spinach into a brownie batter? No, thanks. (You might notice I have strong feelings about this. On my tombstone, it will read, "She never snuck spinach into brownies.")
But then, last week, I was eating some roasted chickpeas and thinking they might be pretty good with cocoa powder and cinnamon. And then I remembered how much I love this dairy-free chocolate mousse made with aquafaba. I decided Trader Joe's Chocolate Hummus was worth a try.

Trader Joe's Chocolate Hummus comes in a little plastic container just like typical savory hummus. In our store, though, it's displayed over by the fruit, not with the hummus and dips. An 8-ounce tub costs $1.99.
The top three ingredients in the hummus are chickpeas, sugar, and Dutch-processed cocoa powder. The hummus looks quite dark, chocolatey, and moist.
Trader Joe's Chocolate Hummus Review
He says (Mark): Well, this is different…The GOOD kind of different. Great aroma, awesome consistency, and I loved the deep, dark chocolate color. I tasted this both off of a spoon and with some pita chips. There's no oil on top like you often see in traditional hummus - just open and serve. It’s thick enough that it won’t fall off of a cracker. This hummus is good for what it is, but I'd pick traditional hummus over this every time.
Overall rating: 4 of 5 stars
She says (Bridget): At first, I did think this chocolate hummus was pretty tasty...and then I realized I was tasting the chocolate pita chip. (Which is from our local grocery store, not TJ's.) I ditched the chips for a spoon. For as dark and rich as the hummus looks, it doesn't pack a chocolate punch. I don't mind the slightly grainy texture; I just want the chocolate. (Is that too much to ask?) Maybe a bit of cinnamon would help? A pinch of espresso powder? In any case, this chocolate hummus did not light a fire in my chocolate-loving soul.
Overall rating: 2.5 of 5 stars
Would I buy it again? No...we'd go for a more traditional chocolate spread.
Trader Joe's Chocolate Hummus: Not terrible, but not delicacy we want to repeat.
